Reward visits for a short rhythm, spend for a larger occasion, and a perk for people who already come back.

Reward visits when the customer comes back often. Reward spend when they come or order less often and the amount matters. Offer a perk when they already return and you want them to feel known. Use one of those for each kind of customer.

That choice has the same shape for restaurants, cafés, bars, bakeries, breweries, and roasteries. The rhythm changes. Some people return in a few days. Some return for a bigger occasion. Some return when it is time to order again.

Visit reward: Earned by returning, counted as times, not as dollars.

Spend reward: Earned from the amount on a visit or an order.

Perk: A standing benefit for customers who already come back, not a hurdle they still have to clear.

Reward visits when the rhythm is short

A visit reward fits people you can expect again soon. A coffee most mornings. Bread several times a week. A regular pint. The reward should land inside that rhythm, so “the next one is free” is close enough to believe.

A visit count is the wrong tool when the natural gap is long. Ten visits means nothing to someone who comes for a birthday or places a large order once a month. Count a visit only when you know it was them. A busy till with no name is a sale, not a visit you can reward.

Reward spend when the purchase is the occasion

A spend reward fits a larger, less frequent purchase. A dinner. A round for a group. A case, a subscription, or a wholesale order. That customer may never hit ten visits. They do spend enough that a benefit tied to the amount matches the trip.

Spend is a weak rule for a small daily purchase. A few dollars a time, turned into points, takes so long to matter that the balance never becomes a reason to return. If the only number you have is the day’s takings, you cannot aim a spend reward at a person.

Offer a perk when they already come back

A perk is for customers who already have the habit. Their usual order, remembered. A better table when you can offer it. A thank-you tied to something they actually buy. The perk shows the relationship.

A percent off for everyone on the list is a promotion, not a perk. A perk has a reason: they are a regular, they reached a threshold they can actually hit, or they came back after being away. If everyone qualifies on day one, the perk has no meaning.

Pick one main reward for each habit

Visits

After a run of visits, the thing they usually buy is free

You cannot tie the visit to a person

Occasional and larger

Spend

A benefit once spend passes an amount they really reach

You only know the day’s takings

Already coming back

A perk

Something they already like, held for them

You would give it to someone who has come once

A second benefit is fine when it is the same idea, such as a birthday beside a visit reward. It is a mess when it is a second game: stamps, plus points, plus a discount that ignores both. If people earn and do not redeem, the hurdle or the prize belongs to a different habit from the one they have.
